Ever wondered why a muslim will labour on pointing out that Muhammad is a true prophet and appeal to the Bible in an effort to locate him in it? It is because the Qu'ran makes this delaration.
"Those who follow the messenger, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find mentioned in their own (scriptures),- in the law and the Gospel;- for he commands them what is just and forbids them what is evil; he allows them as lawful what is good (and pure) and prohibits them from what is bad (and impure); He releases them from their heavy burdens and from the yokes that are upon them. So it is those who believe in him, honour him, help him, and follow the light which is sent down with him,- it is they who will prosper." [Qu'ran 7:157]
According to the above verse, we are expected to find Muhammad in both the Law and the Gospel. Let us examine the passage islamic scholars refer to as an evidence for Muhammad in the Law.
Who did Moses prophesy about?
I will raise them up a Prophet from 1 among their brethren, 2 like unto thee, and will put 5 my words in his mouth; and he shall 3 speak unto them all that I shall command him. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall 4 speak in my name, I will require it of him. [Deuteronomy 18:18-19]
This passage lists at least five criteria that THE PROPHET should fulfill. Let's see how many of these Muhammad meets.
Criterion | Muhammad | Jesus |
| X Not jewish, hated jews | ✓ Jewish, tribe of Judah |
2. Moses (like unto thee) | X God spoke face to face with Moses, but Allah never spoke directly to Muhammad, only through angel Jibrail (gabriel) | ✓ Jesus not only knew God face to face, but declared He is simultaneously in heaven while on earth (John 3:13 ) |
3. Sent to Jews (speak unto them) | X Sent to Arabs | ✓ Sent to the Jews (Mat 15:24) |
4. Speaks in the name of the LORD (speak in my name) | X Spoke in the name of Allah, a foreign god to theBiblical scriptures, not mentioned anywhere by previous prophets | ✓ Spoke in the name of the Lord (Luke 4:18) |
5. Speak Message consistent with other Jewish prophets (will put my words in his mouth) | X Contradicted the previous revelations, denied the Fatherhood of God and the Sonship of Jesus, works contrary tochrist according to 1 John 2:22-23 | ✓ Brought the goodnews of salvation in line with Old Testament prophecies (Luke 4:18-19) |
As you see above, Muhammad doesn't fit even one criteria conclusively. On the contrary, Jesus does!
Peter declared that Prophet is Jesus!
The Apostle Peter, a direct disciple of Jesus who walked and lived day-to-day with Him, was the first person to publicly preach the Gospel after Jesus' resurrection, witnessing thousands convert in a single day. In his very first sermon, Peter declared that Jesus is the Prophet Moses spoke about, as detailed below.
For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people. [Acts 3:22-23]
If you continue reading, Peter asserts that all the prophets, beginning with Samuel, bear witness to THE PROPHET mentioned by Moses. This is a challenging standard to meet, one that only Jesus fulfills and Muhammad cannot.
Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days. Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.[Acts 3:24-26]
Luke records that Jesus indeed attested to this and opened the scriptures to them so they can understand how Christ fulfills the Law and the Prophets.
Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. [Luke 24: 25-27]
Did Isaiah Prophesy Muhammad?
There are schools of thought which also claim that Prophet Isaiah talks about Muhammad, This conjecture is forced into the biblical scripture based on the below passage from the Hadith, which talks about an unlettered prophet intepreted, being interpreted an illiterate prophet.
An Angel came to him and asked him to read. Allah's Messenger replied, "I do not know how to read." The Prophet added, "Then the Angel held me (forcibly) and pressed me so hard that I felt distressed. Then he released me and again asked me to read, and I replied, 'I do not know how to read.' Thereupon he held me again and pressed me for the second time till I felt distressed. He then released me and asked me to read, but again I replied. 'I do not know how to read.' Thereupon he held me for the third time and pressed me till I got distressed, and then he released me and said, 'Read, in the Name of your Lord Who has created (all that exists), has created man out of a clot, Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous. Who has taught (the writing) by the pen, has taught man that which he knew not." [Qur'an 96.1-5, https://sunnah.com/bukhari:4953]
The following text from the Bible is used to make this connection to Muhammad.
And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed: And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned. [Isaiah 29:11-12]
Now, let us examine the context of the above scripture. All you need to do find the context is read a few verses above and few below.
For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered. [Isaiah 29:10]
According to the verse 10, these people cannot read the book because the Lord has:
Poured a spirit of deep sleep
Closed their eyes
Covered them i.e., covered and muffled so they cannot see
And why has the Lord done that?
Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men. [Isaiah 29:13]
If you can read it is clear as day that these are the people who only honor God with their lips and their hearts are far from Him, meaning they are a people who are inwardly rebellious against the Lord but put on an outward show of piety. The context here is of judgement and if you read its about the seige of Jerusalem as a consequence of judgement from God.
If we are to inject Muhammad here, we have to conclude he is under judgement from God and stands in the category of false prophets since these prophets mentioned above will not be able to prophesy being blinded and unable to read.
Below video is an example of how misleading claims are made in this regard.
Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof. Let the wilderness and the cities thereof lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar doth inhabit: let the inhabitants of the rock sing, let them shout from the top of the mountains. Let them give glory unto the LORD, and declare his praise in the islands. [Isaiah 42:10-12]
Anyone who reads these verses can see they are not indicating the arrival of a specific person from these places. Instead, they are an exhortation for all people everywhere to sing praises to the Lord (not Allah) for the salvation He was going to bring.
Where is this praise expected from?
the end of the earth
down from the sea
all that is in the sea
the isles and its inhabitants
the wilderness
the cities
the villages that kedar (descendants of Ishmael) inhabit
inhabitants of the rock (Sela)
from mountain top
In the video, this person claims that the verse indicates someone comes from the people of Kedar, which is not the case here. We read back up, we find that this is referring to the Servant of the Lord (Isaiah 42:1). Let us look at some of the details mentioned about this servant.
This Servant of the Lord who brings good news was to be sent to Jerusalem, not Arabia. 'The first shall say to Zion, Behold, behold them: and I will give to Jerusalem one that bringeth good tidings.' [Isaiah 41:27]
Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law. Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein: I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house. [Isaiah 42:1-7]
If you read the characteristics of this person, you only find fulfillment in Jesus and not in Muhammad even as the Gospel by Matthew records this fulfillment in Mathew chapter 12.
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles. He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory. And in his name shall the Gentiles trust. [Matthew 12:17-21]
Key summary and contrast as per the above verses:
Jesus | Muhammad | |
Sent to the Jerusalem | Yes | Sent to Arabia |
Spirit of the Lord upon Him | Yes (Luke 4:18) and Jewish prophets had the Spirit of the Lord upon them and spoke under the direct influence of the Spirit. | No such concept in Islam, Muhammad only spoke to an angel named Jibrail, which is not consistent with Biblical prophets' relation with the Lord. |
Bring justice to Gentiles | Yes, he made salvation available to Gentiles and sent Apostle Paul to herald the Goodnews to Gentiles. The Gospels record numerous healings of gentiles under Jesus' ministry. | Enslaved Gentiles, fought and killed Gentiles who did not submit to Islam. |
A bruised reed He shall not break | Jesus did not commit violence and forgave even the people who crucified him. | Engaged in war, loot, and has blood on his hands. |
To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house | Fulfilled via Jesus. Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. Matthew 11:4-5 | None fulfilled. |
Covenant to the people | Jesus provided the New Testament in His blood. He finished work and left an inheritance for those who believe in His name. For where there is a [last] will and testament involved, the death of the one who made it must be established, For a will and testament is valid and takes effect only at death, since it has no force or legal power as long as the one who made it is alive. So even the [old] first covenant (God's will) was not inaugurated and ratified and put in force without the shedding of blood. [Hebrews 9:16-18] | Muhammad did not die to provide a testament, as is explained about Jesus. Such a concept does not exist in Islam. The man in the video is either blatantly lying or, at best, ignorant. |
Did Jesus prophesy Ahmad or Muhammad or The Holy Spirit?
There is an attempt to put words in the mouth of Jesus that He prophesied about a coming messenger and that messenger is Muhammad. They claim there were things Jesus could not speak about and the next messenger would bring that message. The below passage from Qu'ran talks about this.
And remember, Jesus, the son of Mary, said: "O Children of Israel! I am the messenger of Allah (sent) to you, confirming the Law (which came) before me, and giving Glad Tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad." But when he came to them with Clear Signs, they said, "this is evident sorcery!" [Qu'ran 61:6 ]
Did you notice the claim is to find AHMAD, not MUHAMMAD, moreover Muhammad's birth name was Qutham, but he later assumed Muhammad.
Nevertheless, we find neither of the names mentioned in the Law or the Gospel? The closest we get is in Song of Solomon 5:16, where the maiden says of her lover, "His mouth is most sweet: yea, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem." The word translated as "lovely" is the Hebrew word machmadim (מַחֲמָדִים). It is the plural form of machmad (מַחֲמָד), which means "beloved, desire, goodly, lovely, pleasant"; where as Muhammad means "praised" and Ahmad being "most praised". Morevover, it does not follow that the verse refers to Muhammad, especially since the word used is a plural adjective, not the name of a person.
But do you know who is indeed mentioned by name? YESHUA that's the original name of Jesus in Hebrew. He is mentioned numerous times in Old Testament prophecies by name like in this verse: "And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation (Yeshua) unto the end of the earth." [Isaiah 49:6]
Going on to the question if Jesus talked about Muhammad when he mentioned the Comforter, let us examine the scriptures below.
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. [John 16:13-14]
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.[John 14:16-17]
From the above we can establish that The Comforter, The Spirit of Truth
Was 'KNOWN' by the disciples (ye know him)
Was dwelling 'WITH' the discples (dwelleth with you)
Shall be 'IN' them (shall be in you)
Is EVERLASTING (abide with them for ever)
Did Muhammad live during the time of the discples?
Muhammad lived in in 6th Century
Was Muhammad knownby the disciples?
NO
Was Muhammad dwelling with the discples?
NO
Did Muhammad dwell within disciples?
NO
Is Muhammad everlasting?
NO WAY!
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. [John 14:26]
Thank God, Jesus defines for us who the comforter is, so there remains no ambiguity it is the Holy Spirit who was revealed by Jesus to the disciples (Acts 10:38), He was dwelling with them through dwelling upon Jesus (John 1:33) and dwelt in the disciples from the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:4, Romans 8:9)
From John 14:26, we have two more criterion listed 'whom the Father will send in my name':
Did Muhammad come in Jesus' name? No, he came in the name of an arabian god Allah, which name is foreign to both Old and New Testaments, none of the Prophets prophesied in this name.
Did the Father send Muhammad? Muhammad affirmed Allah is a father to none in any sense.
But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me. [Jonh 15:26]
If you'd still insist on Muhammad being the Spirit of Truth, Comforter -- you would have to agree that Jesus is Muhammad's God (not a mere prophet) because Jesus said that it is HE that would send the Comforter -- ONLY GOD SENDS PROPHETS, PROPHETS DO NOT SEND PROPHETS.
All Glory to the Lord Jesus Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen. [1 Timothy 6:16]
